The evening before

Most of the day is decided before it starts. By the time you sleep, the vehicle is prepared, the chauffeur is named and the running order is agreed. Nothing on the morning of a members' day should be a first draft.

1. T−18h

   Chauffeur assigned and introduced

   You receive his name, his photograph and his direct mobile number, together with the vehicle's model, colour and plate. Nobody unfamiliar is at the door in the morning, and you can confirm the vehicle from the lobby before you walk out to it.

2. T−16h

   Route confirmed, with the reasoning attached

   Your concierge sends the running order stop by stop, with the timing logic beside each one so you can see why a site sits at 08:30 rather than at noon. You reply with what you want moved, dropped or added; the order is rebuilt and sent back the same evening.

3. T−14h

   Preferences logged against the booking

   Cabin temperature, still or sparkling, coffee or none, conversation or silence, music or nothing, luggage in the cabin or the boot, child seats and their sizes, dietary requirements for any table we hold, and anything you would rather not be asked about twice.

4. T−12h

   Vehicle detailed and staged

   Full valet inside and out, glass and screens cleaned, chiller stocked, towels loaded, fuel and pressures checked. The vehicle is then held staged for your booking overnight rather than returned to general fleet use, so the car that leaves in the morning is the car that was prepared for you.

5. T−10h

   Contingency set

   Where the class allows it, a replacement of the same class or above is identified against your booking before the day starts, and the route is checked against roadworks, event closures and stadium or concert traffic for the morning. You are told about a change; you should never discover one.

The day, hour by hour

A Dubai city day, run to the default shape. An inter-emirate day to Abu Dhabi moves everything earlier; that variation is set out further down.

1. 06:30

   Vehicle staged and cooled

   The chauffeur collects the vehicle three quarters of an hour before he needs it, brings the climate to the temperature logged against your booking, and works the walk-around while it settles: glass, tyres, screens, chiller, towel box, and the boot laid out for your luggage rather than his.

   Why then A cabin cooled from a summer morning takes real minutes to reach a temperature you would call comfortable. Doing that at 06:30 means the first thing you feel at 07:15 is cold air and cold leather, not a warm seat and an apology.

2. 07:00

   Chauffeur on site, fifteen minutes early

   He parks where the doorman expects him rather than where the public car park sends him, tells the desk which guest he is holding for, and stays with the vehicle. If you come down early the car is already there; if you are late, nothing is being counted against you.

   Why then Fifteen minutes absorbs a slow lift, a forgotten passport or a breakfast that ran long without any of it moving the rest of the day.

3. 07:15

   Departure and welcome protocol

   Chilled towels and still and sparkling water are already in the cabin, set to the preferences taken the night before. The chauffeur confirms two things out loud — the first stop and the finish time — then leaves the conversation to you.

   Why then The running order is agreed once, at the start, so you are not consulted at every junction for the following ten hours. From here the day is his problem to run and yours to enjoy.

4. 08:30

   First landmark, ahead of the coaches

   You arrive in the first clean window of the day: the site staffed and open, the queues short, the light still low and directional. The chauffeur sets you down at the nearest permitted entrance rather than the visitor car park and then waits inside a two-minute call, so leaving is as quick as arriving.

   Why then Group coaches arrive on a later, fixed cycle. The same view photographed at 08:30 and at 11:00 is not the same photograph, and the earlier one costs nothing but the alarm.

5. 10:00

   The drive between, treated as part of the day

   Between stops the chauffeur takes the route that shows you something over the route that saves four minutes, and slows where a window is worth the pace. Water and towels are replaced while you are out of the vehicle, so the cabin resets every single time you return to it.

   Why then On a full day you will spend two to three hours in the cabin. Treating that time as transit rather than as part of the experience is the most common failure of a private tour.

6. 11:15

   Late morning, at walking pace

   The second sequence is deliberately lighter — a district, a waterfront, a souk or a gallery, done on foot with the vehicle shadowing you and a pickup point agreed before you step out. The chauffeur carries water and takes anything bought back to the boot so you are not walking with bags.

   Why then Two heavy landmarks back to back is the fastest way for a day to stop being enjoyable by early afternoon. Heat and fatigue both build from here, so nothing after this point is scheduled tightly.

7. 12:45

   Lunch window, held by the concierge

   A table is held the previous evening and reconfirmed that morning, with a second option in a different part of the city in case the day has drifted. Dietary requirements go to the kitchen before you arrive, and the chauffeur sets you down at the entrance and parks where he can return in under five minutes.

   Why then If you would rather eat an hour later, or not at all, the hold moves on a message from your concierge — not on a phone call from you at the table.

8. 14:30

   Afternoon flagship

   The largest item of the day sits after lunch, when the cabin has done its work and the light has stopped being flat. Timed entries, tickets and access confirmations are held in the chauffeur's folder and on your concierge's phone, so nothing about the afternoon depends on your battery or your signal.

   Why then Placing the flagship early looks efficient and reads badly: everything after it feels like a wind-down. Placed here, it lifts the afternoon and hands you straight to the light.

9. 16:15

   Reset stop

   A short, deliberate pause: cabin brought back down after an afternoon of doors opening, water and towels replaced, phones on charge, coffee if the vehicle carries it or from somewhere the chauffeur already knows nearby.

   Why then Fifteen honest minutes here is usually the difference between an evening you enjoy and an evening you endure. It is written into the running order so that nobody has to be the one to ask for it.

10. Sunset −1h

    Golden hour, held for photography

    The last hour before sunset is booked as photography rather than sightseeing, at a position chosen that morning for where the sun will actually be. The chauffeur places the vehicle for the frame, keeps other cars out of it where he can, and takes the photographs himself if you have not booked a specialist.

    Why then Sunset in the Emirates moves by roughly ninety minutes across the year, so this entry carries no fixed clock time — it is set against the actual sunset for your date. For a full stills and film treatment, see Members' services.

11. 19:00

    Evening return and drop-off

    You are returned to the door you left from, or to wherever the evening actually is. The chauffeur unloads, walks anything bought during the day to the desk or the lift with you, checks the cabin for what has been left behind, and confirms the next day before he leaves.

    Why then Waiting at any stop during the day is included. Time held beyond the agreed finish is charged at one tenth of that vehicle's day rate per hour, in half-hour increments, and is always agreed with you before it starts.

12. 20:30

    Optional dinner hold

    If the evening continues, you have two shapes. The chauffeur stands down and returns for a fixed pickup time, or he holds the whole window so the vehicle is outside whenever you decide to stand up. Restaurant, lounge and club reservations are handled by the concierge in the same thread as the rest of the day.

    Why then A fixed pickup is cleaner and costs less; a held window is the right call when you genuinely do not know what time you will be finished.

13. After

    The day is closed out

    Anything left in the cabin is logged and returned that night rather than the following morning. The vehicle goes back for a second valet, the chauffeur files what worked and what did not against your profile, and your concierge sends the shape of tomorrow before you sleep.

    Why then The notes are the point. A member's second day should not need the same conversations as the first.

Standards that do not vary

Five commitments that apply to every members' day, on every vehicle in the collection, without being requested.

• Cabin pre-set, not adjusted on arrival

  The vehicle is brought to your stated temperature before you reach it, every time it is staged and after every long stop with the doors open.

• Restocked at every stop

  Chilled still and sparkling water, cold towels and charging for current phones are replaced while you are out of the vehicle, not when you notice they have run out.

• No handset while the vehicle is moving

  No calls, no messages and no phone in the chauffeur's hand in motion. Anything that needs answering goes through your concierge instead.

• You set the pace

  No stop is ended by the schedule. If you want another twenty minutes somewhere, the rest of the day moves around it and you are not told what that costs the itinerary.

• Silent cabin on request

  Say it once, at any point in the day, and there is no conversation, no music and no commentary until you start one. It is never treated as a complaint.
