The Garden City — Jebel Hafeet's summit road, Al Jahili Fort, the falaj-fed oasis and the camel market. This is a fully private experience in Al Ain: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and an itinerary that flexes on the day.

One price covers the whole vehicle for up to 6 guests — bring the family and the price does not move. Allow about 10 hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

Distances in the Emirates are honest highway miles — your driver handles them while you watch the landscape switch from skyline to dune to mountain. Everything on board is set up for the long, easy day: chargers, cold water, and stops wherever the view earns one.

Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

Your day, stop by stop

  1. 07:30 · Inland, typically

An early pick-up, then the drive east as the towers give way to dunes and the dunes to oasis green — about ninety minutes from Abu Dhabi. Al Ain is the UAE's fourth-largest city and its oldest continuously inhabited place, which explains the day ahead. Your driver-guide fills the drive with the back-story.

  2. 09:30 · The camel market, while trade is on

One of the last big livestock markets in the Emirates, loud with traders, trucks and several hundred opinionated camels. Morning is when the dealing happens, which is why we come first. Your guide keeps you on the right side of etiquette and the animals.

  3. 11:00 · Al Jahili Fort

A handsome 1890s mud-brick fort built to guard the oasis, with quiet courtyards and an exhibition on the explorer Wilfred Thesiger, who crossed the Empty Quarter and kept coming back here. It is the calm after the camel market. The photography inside rewards patience.

  4. 12:30 · The oasis on foot

Al Ain Oasis: thousands of date palms fed by falaj channels, the irrigation system that made settled life here possible and helped earn the city its UNESCO World Heritage listing. Shaded, flat and several degrees cooler than the street. Lunch follows nearby, around 13:30, chosen to taste.

  5. 15:00 · Jebel Hafeet, hairpin by hairpin

The summit road climbs to around 1,240 metres through a series of sweeping switchbacks that driving magazines have been in love with for decades. From the top, the dunes run to the horizon on one side and the oasis city sits green below on the other. Late afternoon puts the best light on both.

  6. 17:00 · The run home

Down the mountain and back towards the coast, sunset colours included at the right time of year. Door at roughly the ten-hour mark, depending on how long the summit held you. Most guests sleep; the guide takes no offence.

Insider tips

  • Insist on the early start — the camel market runs on morning trade, and by noon you are photographing parked trucks.
  • Wear closed shoes for the market and save the sandals for the oasis; the ground is exactly what you would expect.
  • Bring a light jacket for Jebel Hafeet even when the city is warm — the summit can feel a different season.
  • Buy dates in Al Ain rather than at the airport; the quality is better, the price is kinder, and cash makes souq stalls quicker.
  • Ask the guide to pause at the viewing points partway up the mountain — the mid-climb angles beat the summit car park for photographs.

Questions, answered

How much driving is involved?

Around ninety minutes each way between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, plus the half-hour summit road, which is a highlight rather than a transfer. Within Al Ain the stops sit close together. The Fortuner-class 4x4 and a professional driver make the mountain section easy.

Is the camel market comfortable for visitors and children?

It is a genuine working market — smells, noise and hard-nosed trading included — and most children find it the best thing all day. Stay close to your guide, keep clear of loading trucks, and ask before photographing traders. Unofficial helpers may offer tours for a tip; your guide will politely manage that.

How much walking is there, and is it manageable in heat?

The oasis and fort are flat, shaded and gentle; the market is a slow wander; the summit is mostly driven. In summer we front-load the outdoor stops and lean on the oasis shade at midday. Guests with limited mobility should tell us in advance — the day adapts well.

What should we wear and bring?

Light clothing with shoulders and knees loosely covered, closed shoes for the camel market, and a hat. Bring a layer for the summit — it can be markedly cooler and breezier than the city below. Water lives in the car all day.

Do we need passports for the Oman border?

No — Al Ain sits against the Omani town of Buraimi, but this tour stays entirely on the UAE side, so no border formalities apply. Carry whatever ID you would normally carry in the UAE. If you fancy adding Oman properly, ask about our Oman combination trips.

Is the tour worth doing in summer?

Yes, with honest caveats: expect serious heat from June to September, and we reorder the day around shade and the cooler summit. The oasis was engineered for exactly this climate and shows it. October to April is the comfortable season if your dates are flexible.
