The 'Norway of Arabia' — fjord cruising, dolphins and snorkelling from a traditional dhow. This is a fully private experience in Musandam: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and an itinerary that flexes on the day.

Your day, stop by stop

Before dawn · The long road north
This is a proper expedition, so we start early — typically before sunrise. Your driver-guide collects you and the Carnival settles into the run north through Ras Al Khaimah, coffee stop included. Sleep if you like; the scenery only gets serious after the border.
Morning · Crossing into Oman
At the Al Dara border post you clear UAE exit and Oman entry — passports out, paperwork we will have briefed you on beforehand. It typically takes under an hour. Then the coast road to Khasab: cliffs on one side, turquoise water on the other, and some of the best driving scenery in Arabia.
Around 10:00 · Aboard the dhow
At Khasab harbour you board a traditional wooden dhow crewed by our partner operator — cushioned deck, shaded canopy, carpets, and a kettle that never quite stops. Shoes off, recline, and the fjords open up ahead of you.
Late morning · Khor Ash Sham and the dolphins
The dhow noses into Khor Ash Sham, the great fjord walled in bare rock, past fishing villages reachable only by boat. Pods of dolphins frequently ride the bow wave — a regular pleasure, though never a promise. Your guide tells the strange story of Telegraph Island as you approach it.
Midday · Swim and snorkel stops
The dhow anchors near Telegraph Island for swimming and snorkelling — kit provided on board. The water is clear, calm and busy with reef fish. Non-swimmers can watch the whole show from the deck with tea in hand, which is a perfectly honourable choice.
Around 13:00 · Lunch on deck
A generous buffet lunch is served on board — typically grilled fish, chicken, rice, salads and fruit, with soft drinks and water through the day. No alcohol on the dhow; in the UAE and Oman alike, only licensed venues serve it, and a wooden boat in a fjord is not one.
Afternoon · Back across the border, home by evening
Mid-afternoon the dhow returns to Khasab, and you retrace the coast road and the border crossing southbound. You are typically back at your hotel in the evening — salt-haired, sun-warmed and about four hundred photos heavier.

Insider tips

Do not book this for the day before your flight. It is a border crossing and a long road; give it a day with nothing behind it.
Claim a spot near the bow early. That is where the dolphins play, and the difference between bow and stern is the difference between a photo and a story about a photo.
AED cash is widely accepted in Khasab, so there is no need to hunt down Omani rials for a day trip — but bring notes, not just cards.
Pack reef shoes or old trainers for the snorkel stops; the shallows around Telegraph Island are rocky underfoot.
Save your phone battery on the drive up. Between the coast road, the fjord and the dolphins, the camera work starts at the border and does not stop.

Questions, answered

Do I need my passport and a visa?

Passport, yes — bring it, with at least six months' validity, or the border will end the day early. Entry arrangements for Musandam vary by nationality and can change, so we confirm exactly what applies to you before you book. Border fees are payable and we will brief you on those too.

Are the dolphins guaranteed?

No wild animal is, and we will not pretend otherwise. That said, the humpback dolphins of Khor Ash Sham appear on a clear majority of cruises, often riding the bow within metres of you. The fjords are worth the day even on the rare cruise they sit out.

I get seasick. Should I worry?

Less than you think. The dhow cruises inside a sheltered fjord, not open sea, and the water is typically flat. The dhow moves slowly and the deck is stable; if you are very susceptible, take your usual remedy before boarding and sit midship.

What should I bring and wear?

Swimwear under light clothing, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a dry change of clothes. Dress modestly for the border and Khasab town — shoulders and knees covered. A dry bag for phones is sensible; the deck is shaded but the sun off the water is strong.

Is the day suitable for children or older guests?

Yes — the dhow is essentially a floating majlis, and lying on cushions watching cliffs go by suits every age. The long drive and border stop are the real test, so bring entertainment for young children. Boarding involves a gangway step; tell us about mobility needs and we will plan for them.

What are the facilities on board?

A shaded deck with cushions and carpets, a simple washroom, and a crew making tea, coffee and lunch. It is comfortable rather than luxurious — that is the charm. Anything you cannot live without for six hours afloat, bring with you.
