Your day, stop by stop

Around 08:00 · The road north
Pick-up in Abu Dhabi and about 90 minutes up the E11. Your guide uses the drive well — the pearl-diving economy, the oil pivot, and why the Creek is where the whole Dubai story starts. You arrive already oriented.
Mid-morning · Al Fahidi's lanes
The old quarter on foot: wind towers, coral-stone walls, courtyard cafés and small galleries in restored houses. This is Dubai at walking pace, which is not a sentence you will say about anywhere else in the city. Around an hour, unhurried.
The crossing · An abra over the Creek
You board a wooden abra and cross the Creek the way workers have for generations, engine thumping, dhows and minarets sliding past. It is the city's oldest commute and its best few minutes on the water. Hold your hat.
The spice souk · Sniff first, buy second
Sacks of saffron, frankincense, dried limes and things you will need identified. The traders enjoy the theatre and so should you. Your guide translates, vouches and keeps the pressure friendly.
The gold souk · Window after window
Whole shopfronts of bangles and wedding sets, with the day's gold rate displayed on boards. Your guide explains how purity and weighing actually work, which changes the haggling entirely. Buying is optional; gawping is compulsory.
Lunch by the Creek
A creekside lunch watching dhows load cargo bound for ports across the Gulf — this is a working waterway, not a museum piece. Options range from simple to smart. Your guide will match the table to your appetite.
The drive home
An optional stop at the dhow wharfage on the way out, then the quiet run back to Abu Dhabi. You are home by evening, smelling faintly of frankincense. Around nine hours door to door.

Insider tips

Morning is the good light in Al Fahidi — by noon the lanes go flat and hot, which is exactly why this tour starts early.
Have your guide check the saffron before you pay; grade matters far more than the size of the heap.
In the gold souk, the gold itself is priced by weight at the posted rate — the workmanship is the part you haggle.
Cross the Creek twice from different stations if you can. Same water, entirely different views.
Leave room in your bag — frankincense and dried limes travel well and cost little, and they are the souvenirs that still smell of the trip a year on.

How much walking is involved?

Roughly three to four kilometres across the day, at a gentle pace with shade and café stops between. The car repositions to meet you, so there are no long marches. Tell us about any mobility concerns and we will trim the route.

Do I have to haggle?

Only in the souks, and even there it is optional — your guide will happily do the first round with you so you learn the rhythm. It is a polite sport, not a confrontation. Walking away is always allowed and often effective.

What should I wear?

Covering shoulders and knees is respectful in the old quarters and souks, and light fabrics make the day far easier. Comfortable shoes matter — the lanes are uneven in places. A hat earns its keep by mid-morning.

Cash or card in the souks?

Shops take cards, but cash bargains noticeably better — bring dirhams in small notes for the souks and the abra crossing. There are ATMs in the area if you run short. Your guide will steer you on fair prices before you commit.

Is the abra suitable for small children?

It is a short crossing on an open wooden boat, and children usually rate it the best part of the day. Hold small ones close — public abras do not carry life jackets as standard, which is worth knowing honestly. If you would rather skip it, the route works by road too.

Can I photograph people in the souks?

Buildings, dhows and market scenes are fine; for portraits of shopkeepers and workers, ask first — most say yes cheerfully when asked. Your guide will handle the request in Arabic if you like. A purchase makes willing subjects of almost everyone.
