Gahwa ritual, poetry, saluki dogs and dinner — the desert as living culture, not theme park. A small-group experience in Abu Dhabi, run to a standard we would put our own name on — because we do.
Allow about 5 hours door to door. Departures are kept small, kit is provided, and hotel pickup can be added at checkout.

The desert works on its own clock: light that turns from white to gold in twenty minutes, dunes that change shape with the wind, and a silence you can hear. We time every departure around the light, not the schedule — and your driver knows which crest to stop on.
Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

Your day, stop by stop
Late afternoon · Pickup
Your driver-guide collects you in our Kia Carnival, typically around 16:00 depending on season, and heads out of the city. The brief on the drive is simple: tonight is about hospitality, not stunts.
Arrival · Gahwa and dates
You're welcomed the way guests have been welcomed here for centuries — Arabic coffee poured from the dallah into small cups, always with the right hand, always refilled until you signal enough. The host explains the ritual as you go, with dates to sweeten the cardamom.
Sunset from the dune
As the light drops you climb the dune behind camp and watch the desert turn amber, then rose, then grey. It's ten minutes of nobody checking their phone, which may be the rarest part of the evening.
The salukis
You meet the saluki — the Bedouin sighthound that hunted alongside falcons across these sands, and one of the oldest dog breeds on earth. The handlers show what the dogs can do and explain a partnership between humans and animals that made desert life possible.
Dinner under the stars
A spread of Emirati dishes served the traditional way, seated at low tables around the majlis. It's unhurried by design — this is dinner as it's meant to happen, with conversation as the main course.
Poetry by the fire
The evening closes around the fire with Nabati poetry and stories, then a few quiet minutes of stargazing away from the flames. You're typically back at your hotel around five hours after pickup.
Insider tips
- Bring a proper warm layer even after a 40-degree day. The desert forgets its manners the moment the sun goes down.
- Learn the one piece of gahwa etiquette that matters: take the cup with your right hand, and wobble it gently side to side when you've had enough.
- Eat a light lunch. Dinner is generous and the dishes deserve an honest appetite.
- Ask your hosts questions — about the poetry, the dogs, their grandparents' desert crossings. The conversation is the souvenir.
- After dinner, walk twenty metres from the fire and give your eyes two minutes. The stars out here are a different sky entirely.
Questions, answered
Is alcohol served?
No. In the UAE alcohol is only served at licensed venues, and a desert camp isn't one. The compensation is proper gahwa, karak and the best fresh juice of your trip, and honestly the evening doesn't miss it.
Can dietary requirements be catered for?
Yes — vegetarian and most other requirements are straightforward with notice. Tell us when you book rather than on the night, and the camp kitchen will look after you properly.
Is there a dress code?
Relaxed but modest is the right note — shoulders and knees covered suits the setting. Bring a warm layer whatever the daytime temperature was; the desert cools sharply after dark, especially November to February.
Is this suitable for children?
Very. Dogs, dunes, firelight and dates cover most childhood interests, and the pace is gentle. Children who fade early can doze on the majlis cushions while the poetry carries on.
How is this different from a standard desert safari?
It's built around culture rather than adrenaline — coffee ritual, salukis, poetry and a long dinner instead of a conveyor belt of activities. Smaller, slower and quieter, on purpose. If you want dune bashing, this isn't that evening.
What about prayer times during the evening?
The camp hosts may pause briefly for maghrib prayer around sunset, and guests are welcome to watch the evening carry on around it or simply enjoy the quiet. Nothing is expected of you beyond ordinary respect.
