The safari that doesn't end — dinner, a fire, a tent and sunrise over untouched sand. This is a fully private experience in Abu Dhabi: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and an itinerary that flexes on the day.

One price covers the whole vehicle for up to 6 guests — bring the family and the price does not move. Allow about 16 hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

The specialist activity on this experience is delivered by our permitted desert camp operator, working under their own permits and insurance, with a Aura Avenue driver-guide looking after you door to door.

The desert works on its own clock: light that turns from white to gold in twenty minutes, dunes that change shape with the wind, and a silence you can hear. We time every departure around the light, not the schedule — and your driver knows which crest to stop on.

Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

Your day, stop by stop

  1. 15:30 · Afternoon pick-up, city receding

We collect you from your hotel in the mid-afternoon with everything for the night already loaded. The drive to the dunes takes around an hour, and there is a particular pleasure in watching the towers give way to sand knowing you are not coming back tonight.

  2. 16:45 · The dune drive in

The camp is reached the proper way — over the dunes, not around them. Tyres down, a safety brief, and thirty-odd minutes of crests and slip faces with the light already turning. By the time the camp appears in its hollow, you have earned it.

  3. 18:00 · Sunset from the ridge

Time for a camel ride or a sandboard run, then the evening's main appointment: the ridge above camp as the sun goes down. The dunes turn amber, then rose, and the temperature drops into something gentle. This is typically when the phones come out and then, quietly, get put away.

  4. 19:30 · Dinner and the fire

A barbecue dinner cooked at camp, eaten around the fire — grilled meats, salads, Arabic breads, gahwa and dates. Afterwards there is nothing scheduled, which is deliberate. Firelight and unhurried conversation are the original desert entertainment and they have not been improved on.

  5. 22:00 · Lights off, sky on

Away from the city glow, the sky is the show. On a clear moonless night the Milky Way is plainly visible, and your guide can walk you round the constellations. Then to your tent — proper bedding, blankets rated for the real desert night, and a silence most guests have genuinely never heard.

  6. Sunrise · The part nobody expects to love most

You are woken gently before first light, tea in hand, as the sun comes up over untouched sand. No monument in the Emirates beats this half hour. A light breakfast follows, unhurried.

  7. 08:00 · Back over the dunes to town

One last drive out of the sand, tyres up, and the run back to the city. You are typically at your hotel by mid-morning — slightly sandy, well fed and recalibrated. Late check-out at your hotel is worth arranging; you will want the shower and the nap.

Insider tips

  • Check the moon phase when you book. A moonless night gives you the Milky Way; a full moon turns the dunes silver and bright enough to walk by. Both are superb — but they are different nights.
  • Bring a headtorch rather than relying on your phone. Two free hands at a camp are worth a great deal.
  • Shake out your shoes in the morning before putting them on. It is almost certainly unnecessary. Do it anyway — it is the desert's oldest habit for a reason.
  • Say yes to the pre-dawn wake-up call. Sunrise over untouched sand is the single best thing on this itinerary and the only one you can sleep through.
  • Book a late check-out at your city hotel for the day you return. The shower and nap are part of the experience; plan for them.

Questions, answered

What are the toilet and washing facilities like?

Honest answer: simple and clean. The camp has shared toilet facilities and basic washing water — this is proper camping with comforts, not a hotel in canvas. If you want private bathrooms and hot showers under the stars, our Luxury Desert Glamping is the product built for exactly that.

How cold does it get at night?

Colder than people believe. From November to February the desert can drop close to single figures before dawn, and even shoulder seasons turn crisp. We provide proper bedding and blankets, but bring a warm layer and socks. Summer nights, by contrast, stay warm.

Is alcohol available at the camp?

No. In the UAE alcohol is only served at licensed venues, and our desert camp is not one — please do not bring your own, as consuming it there is not permitted. The fire, the food and that sky do a surprising amount of the work a drink usually does.

Is this suitable for children?

Very — children tend to treat the whole thing as the best night of the holiday, and the camp routine of fire, food and stars needs no explaining to them. We fit child seats for the transfer and moderate the dune drive with kids aboard. Bring their warm layers and any comfort items for the tent.

What should I pack?

Little: a warm layer, socks, closed shoes, a torch or headtorch, sunscreen, any medication, and a power bank — charging at camp is limited. Leave the suitcase at your hotel and bring a small overnight bag. We handle bedding, food, water and everything structural.

Is there phone signal? Are there dangerous animals?

Signal is patchy-to-decent depending on the dune you are standing on — treat the night as mostly offline and it becomes a feature. As for wildlife, the desert's residents are shy and want nothing to do with you; sensible camp habits, which your guide will cover, are all that is required.
