The desert works on its own clock: light that turns from white to gold in twenty minutes, dunes that change shape with the wind, and a silence you can hear. We time every departure around the light, not the schedule — and your driver knows which crest to stop on.

Afternoon pickup
Collection from your hotel typically starts mid-afternoon, within a window of around 30 to 45 minutes while the group is gathered. The timing is built backwards from sunset, which is the whole point of an evening safari. Travel light; sand gets into everything else.
The edge of the sands
At the desert's edge you transfer into 4x4s and the drivers let air out of the tyres, which is the ritual that tells you things are about to get interesting. The dune drive is delivered by licensed drivers with permitted partner operators. Seatbelts on, cameras ready.
The dune drive
Around 30 to 45 minutes of proper dune driving, with the vehicle tilting at angles your inner ear will want to discuss. It is exhilarating rather than dangerous, and anyone who prefers to skip it can transfer directly to camp instead. Just say so at booking.
Sunset on the ridge
The convoy stops on a high dune as the sun drops and the sand turns copper. This is the photograph the entire trip is secretly for. It lasts about twenty minutes, so shoot first and admire second.
Camp life
At the desert camp you will find camel rides, sandboarding, henna, and Arabic coffee with dates, all included and all optional. The rhythm is shared: activities run in gentle rotation as the group spreads out. No one hurries you between them.
BBQ under the lights
Dinner is a barbecue buffet with salads and breads, eaten at low tables under lamplight. Entertainment programmes run on most evenings and vary by season. It is unhurried by design.
Home by night
The 4x4s run you back across the sand to the vehicles, and drop-offs at hotels follow in reverse order, typically by late evening. Around six hours after pickup, you are showering off the Empty Quarter's smaller cousin. Worth every grain.
Insider tips
- Eat a light lunch. The dune drive and a full stomach have a well-documented rivalry.
- Prone to motion sickness? Ask for a front seat when you board the 4x4 and keep your eyes on the horizon.
- Bring a layer. Desert temperatures drop surprisingly fast after sunset, especially between November and March.
- Wear sandals or shoes that slip off easily; you will be in and out of soft sand all evening.
- The sunset window is short. Take your photographs in the first ten minutes on the ridge, then put the phone away and watch the rest.

What time is pickup?

Is the dune drive safe, and can I skip it?
It is run by licensed drivers with permitted partner operators, in maintained 4x4s with seatbelts. It is not suitable for pregnant travellers, very young children, or anyone with back or neck problems, and a direct camp transfer can be arranged instead. Tell us at booking.
What is included?
Hotel pickup and drop-off, the dune drive, the sunset stop, camp activities such as camel rides, sandboarding and henna, plus the BBQ dinner with water and soft drinks. Anything beyond that is confirmed at booking rather than assumed.
Is there vegetarian food?

Children are welcome at the camp and generally treat sandboarding as a religious experience. The dune drive is the one part to consider carefully for small children; a gentler drive or direct transfer can be requested. Give us ages at booking.
