Flat lagoon water, patient instructors and the easiest watersport to fall in love with. A small-group experience in Abu Dhabi, run to a standard we would put our own name on — because we do.

Allow about 2 hours door to door. Departures are kept small, kit is provided, and hotel pickup can be added at checkout.

The specialist activity on this experience is delivered by our licensed marine operator, working under their own permits and insurance, with a Aura Avenue driver-guide looking after you door to door.

The Gulf here is calm, shallow and improbably turquoise — closer to a lagoon than open sea on most days. Expect skyline views from the water, easy conditions, and gear handled for you end to end.

Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

Your day, stop by stop

  1. 07:00 · Pickup for the glassy hour

Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel in the house Kia Carnival, typically around 07:00 for morning sessions. The early slot is deliberate. The lagoon is at its flattest before the sea breeze wakes up, and flat water is what makes this the easiest watersport there is.

  2. 07:30 · Kit and the dry-land brief

On the sand you meet the instructor from our partner operator, who sizes your paddle, fits a leash and buoyancy aid, and runs the brief. It takes ten minutes and covers the three things that matter: where to stand on the board, how to hold the paddle, and how to fall without drama.

  3. 07:45 · Knees first

You launch kneeling and paddle a few easy lengths to feel how the board sits. This is the part everyone rushes and shouldn't. Two minutes of kneeling tells your body everything it needs to know about balance.

  4. 08:00 · Standing up

The instructor talks you up one movement at a time: feet where your knees were, eyes on the horizon, stand in one motion. Most first-timers are up within a few tries. If you go in, the water is warm, waist-deep and forgiving, and you climb straight back on.

  5. 08:30 · The mangrove-edge glide

Now the good part. You paddle a slow loop along the lagoon edge, where herons pick through the shallows and small rays sometimes ghost under the board. The instructor stays close but lets you find your own rhythm.

  6. 09:00 · Rinse, change, karak on request

Back on the beach you rinse off, change, and settle into the Carnival. If you have earned a karak on the way back to the hotel, your driver-guide knows where. Most guests have.

Insider tips

  • Take the first slot of the day. The lagoon is glassiest before the breeze arrives mid-morning, and glassy water is the difference between standing and swimming.
  • Look down as often as ahead. The seagrass shallows hold rays, needlefish and the occasional small turtle, and most beginners miss all of it staring at the horizon.
  • If you fall, fall flat and sideways, never feet-first. The water is shallow, and a flat splash costs you nothing but dignity.
  • Keep the paddle blade angled away from you and your eyes up when standing. Ninety per cent of wobbles come from looking at your own feet.
  • Book a dawn session and keep the rest of the day free. You will be back at the hotel by mid-morning, which makes this the best warm-up act in Abu Dhabi.

Questions, answered

I have never paddleboarded. Will I actually manage to stand up?

Almost certainly. The lagoon is flat, sheltered water, which removes the main thing that defeats beginners, and the instructor from our partner operator stays within a few metres. Most first-timers are standing within the first half hour, and kneeling the whole session is a perfectly respectable plan B.

What should I wear and bring?

Swimwear under light clothes, a hat that stays on, reef-safe sunscreen and a full change of clothes. You paddle barefoot or in water shoes. Leave watches, sunglasses without a strap and anything precious in the car.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need basic swimming confidence, not laps-of-the-pool fitness. You wear a leash so the board never leaves you, buoyancy aids are provided, and the session runs in shallow, calm water. If you cannot swim at all, tell us at booking and we will advise honestly.

Can children join?

Yes, typically from around eight to ten years with an adult in the group, subject to our partner operator's rules on the day. Smaller children can sometimes share a board with a parent. Tell us ages when you book and we will confirm before you pay for anything.

Can I take my phone for photos?

Only in a waterproof pouch on a lanyard, and even then accept the risk. A better plan is to leave it ashore. Your driver-guide can take photos from the beach, and the memory of rays under your board survives without evidence.

What about summer heat?

Sessions move to first light in the hottest months, and being on the water helps more than you would think. The lagoon stays warm year-round, so falling in is refreshment rather than punishment. Bring water and drink it.
