Pickup · To the city's edge
Your driver-guide collects you in our Kia Carnival for the drive out towards the airport side of the city, typically 30 to 40 minutes from downtown. The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is the world's largest, and it is a genuine working hospital — that's the whole point.
Check-in · A waiting room like no other
You start where the patients do: a waiting area with hooded falcons sitting calmly on perches beside their owners. It looks like a GP's surgery, except every patient is a bird of prey worth guarding with your life.
The examination room
With the hospital's guide you watch the vets at work — talon trims, beak shaping, health checks, and feather repair on birds resting under light anaesthesia. It's routine clinical care, done with the seriousness the owners expect.
The free-flight aviary
You walk through the aviary where recovering birds fly free overhead. After the clinical rooms it's the exhale of the tour — falcons doing falcon things, at close range.
A falcon on your arm
The visit typically ends with a glove on your hand and a falcon stepping onto it for the photograph. Staff supervise everything; you just have to hold still and look calmer than you feel.
Museum corner and the drive home
A short browse through the displays on falconry heritage, then back to the Carnival and your hotel. Door to door, plan around three and a half hours.
Insider tips
- Lock in your tour slot before you build the rest of your itinerary — the hospital's times are fixed and we schedule around them, not the other way round.
- Take a morning slot if offered; that's typically when the treatment rooms are busiest and there's most to see.
- Ask the guide about imping — feather transplants from a donor-feather bank. It's the detail that turns sceptics into enthusiasts.
- Watch the waiting room as much as the wards. Owners with their birds is the best people-watching in the emirate.
- Wear closed shoes and treat it like the clinic it is — the guests who get the most out of it are the ones asking the vets questions.
Questions, answered
Can we visit any day we like?
No — the hospital runs scheduled guided tours on set days and times, and places must be pre-booked. We arrange the slot and build your pickup around it, which is exactly why booking this one early in your trip planning helps.
Is it squeamish?
Not really. What you see is routine care — trims, checks, feather work — on birds resting under sedation, and the guide explains everything as it happens. If a genuinely surgical case is in progress, you won't be standing over it.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, and curious children tend to love it — it's a vet clinic where every patient is a falcon. Young children need to stay close to you, since this is a working medical facility rather than a zoo.
Can I take photos?
In most areas, yes, including the glove moment at the end. The hospital's guide will flag anywhere photography isn't allowed, and flash is best avoided around the birds throughout.
How close do we get to the falcons?
Closer than almost anywhere else — hooded birds in the waiting room, patients on the treatment table a few steps away, free-flying birds in the aviary, and one on your own arm at the end. Hooded falcons are remarkably calm, which is why the hood exists.
Is it true falcons have passports?
Yes. The UAE issues actual passports for falcons so they can travel with their owners, and the hospital is a good place to hear how that system works. It's the fact guests repeat most on the drive home.
