At the carpet souk, tea appears and rugs start flying open. No obligation — but if you are buying, your guide helps you ask about origin, knot count and wool versus silk. Taking your time is the entire etiquette.

A modern take on the traditional market downtown: latticed walkways, Emirati perfumers, oud, abayas, spice and sweets. It is calmer than the working souks and fixed-price, which some shoppers find a relief.

Insider tips

Dates make the best gifts: light, generous-looking and welcome in every suitcase. Buy at the souq, not the airport, and always taste before you box.
In the carpet shops, accept the tea. Nothing is owed, everything slows down agreeably, and the prices tend to follow.
Ask for the tax-free tag before you pay — the refund must be arranged at the till, not remembered at the airport.
Do the souks before noon and the malls after. You will be following the temperature and the crowds in the correct order.
If a carpet is a maybe, photograph it with the shop's card and sleep on it. Good merchants hold pieces, and a return visit is easy to arrange.

Questions, answered

Is haggling expected?

At the souks, yes — politely, with a smile, and mostly from the second item onwards. Malls and the modern souk are fixed-price. Your guide will tell you where bargaining is sport and where it is just awkward.

Cash or card?

Malls and most souk shops take cards, but small stalls prefer cash and it strengthens your bargaining position. Carry some smaller notes; there are ATMs along the route.

Can tourists claim VAT back?

Yes — the UAE runs a tourist VAT-refund scheme at participating retailers. Ask for the tax-free tag at the till, then validate at the airport before you fly. Your guide will walk you through it at the first eligible shop.

What happens to my bags between stops?

They ride in the locked Kia Carnival with your driver, so you never carry anything further than the shop door. That is, frankly, the whole point of the format.

How much time do we get at each stop?

It is your tour — the schedule is typical, not fixed. Linger over carpets, skip the mall, double the date souq; your guide reworks the timings on the fly.

Is Friday a good day for this tour?

Friday schedules shift around midday prayers and many traders open later, so we usually suggest other days for the souk-heavy version. If Friday is your only day, we reorder the route — malls first, souks after — and it works fine.
